References to a project named “Tamba” have been found in the latest build of YouTube for Android, raising the possibility that Google is exploring a social-networking service connected to the video platform, according to a report by Android Authority.
The references include code and visual assets, among them a logo distinct from YouTube’s usual design. Code strings mention private messages, group chats, likes and follower requests, features that could form part of a YouTube-focused social experience.
The findings do not establish whether Tamba would become a standalone app or serve as a way to test social features within YouTube. It is also possible the project will not be released publicly. YouTube has already added some social functions in the past year, including direct messaging.
Mashable said it contacted Google for comment. The report did not include a response from the company.
