A woman’s complaint about her neighbor’s 10-year-old daughter sparked debate on Reddit after she said the girl repeatedly prevented her 3-year-old son from playing with the neighbor’s 5-year-old boy. The post was shared in r/AmItheAsshole on Nov. 2 and had received 128 comments at the time of publication.
According to the woman, her son went to the neighbors’ yard to play with the 5-year-old. She said the older sister repeatedly took the younger boy away from her brother, upsetting him in the process.
In one incident described in the post, the 5-year-old invited the younger child to play. The 10-year-old then called the 3-year-old over to play with her instead. The mother said she asked the girl to let the boys play together.
She also wrote that the neighbor’s son later asked his sister to ride her scooter, but the girl took the 3-year-old and asked him to ride with her. The mother said the girl was moving so quickly that her son fell and began crying. When she intervened, she said the girl looked at her without responding.
The woman said the situation had made her reluctant to let her son play at the neighbors’ home. She questioned whether she should tell the girl’s mother that the 10-year-old was too old to be playing with a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old. She added that the children’s grandmother sometimes reminded the girl that she was too old to play with the younger children.
Her husband reportedly believed she was overreacting because the children were only playing. The woman said she was becoming frustrated and recalled that her own mother would have told her she was too old to play with children of those ages.
Several commenters disagreed with her position. One argued that the girl was in her own yard and that the mother had no authority to tell her what to do there. Another said the woman appeared entitled for sending her child into the neighbors’ yard and then scolding the daughter for trying to play with him.
A third commenter suggested that the mother keep her son in their own yard or find another 3-year-old to play with, noting that a 5-year-old might not be interested in playing with a toddler.
The claims in the Reddit thread have not been independently verified. The events and the identities of those involved remain unconfirmed.
