OpenAI is preparing to simplify ChatGPT’s interface by merging its Chat and Work tabs into a single experience. The company outlined the planned change in an email to users, according to TechCrunch, and intends to run a limited test before expanding the rollout.

At present, Chat is intended for everyday questions and conversational assistance, while Work is designed for longer and more complex tasks such as research, information analysis, and the creation of documents, presentations and websites. The separate Codex experience for coding will remain outside the merged interface.

OpenAI says the change will allow users to move from developing an idea to completing a larger task without switching between sections. Users will also be able to add files and plugins while monitoring and directing ChatGPT’s work.

The interface update will coincide with a change to usage allowances for paid subscribers. Starting in December, Plus, Pro and Business plans will use a shared allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, according to OpenAI’s updated support page. Usage will be calculated in tokens, and more demanding tasks and advanced models will generally consume more of the allowance.

Instant chat will not count against that shared allowance. OpenAI expects most users to encounter resets no more frequently than they do currently. Subscribers will be able to see their combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings, under Usage.

After reaching a limit, users may have to wait for the allowance to reset, upgrade their plan, or purchase credits for eligible features. The planned test will help OpenAI assess how users respond to bringing more complex work into the main ChatGPT experience.
