Apple is introducing new age-rating requirements for apps that include dating and relationship features. From November 16, developers must assign these apps a minimum 18+ rating in App Store Connect and disclose whether they allow real-time location sharing.
For established dating platforms such as Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, the rating requirement may change little, since they already restrict access to adults. The policy’s effects on AI companion apps are less clear. Services including Replika, Nomi and Character.AI have been used by teenagers for emotional and social interactions, including friendship and romantic role-play.
A 2025 survey of U.S. teens aged 13 to 17 found that 52 percent regularly used AI companions, while 33 percent used them for social interaction and relationships. Researchers at Common Sense Media have warned that these services may pose risks to minors, reporting that safety measures such as age gates and terms-of-service restrictions could be circumvented.
Replika says its service is intended for users over 18, and its terms of service set that age limit. However, CEO Dmytro Klochko acknowledged in 2025 that some users try to bypass the company’s measures against underage access.
It remains to be seen whether Apple’s new rules will address these concerns. Developers must complete the required declarations by January 12, 2027.
